CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Emilia’s lips met his, and for a moment he lost the ability to think about what was happening, as she was now kissing him passionately.

It felt so good. He couldn’t deny that. Emilia had been coming onto him for such a long time now, and here she was, practically throwing herself at him. Yes, she was drunk, but so was he. It wasn’t like he’d be taking advantage of her, was it?

She knew how to kiss, and it would be the easiest thing in the world to go along with it, to let her drag him into the bedroom where they could both do what they wanted to do. But Mike was torn. He was enjoying making out with her, that much was obvious, but he couldn’t escape the nagging voice in the back of his mind.

As drunk as he was, that Catholic conscience of his wouldn’t let him feel good about doing this. Instead of listening to his body, he listened to that nagging voice.

This is wrong. You can’t do it. Even if you did it, you’d feel so bad about it that it wouldn’t be fun.

He’d made a commitment to Eileen, and she had the right to expect him to honor that commitment. On top of that, Emilia was obviously drunk. He was too, but he wasn’t as drunk as she was. If he had sex with Emilia, he would be taking advantage of her.

“Hey.”

His voice was gentle as he pushed her away from him by both of her shoulders. The push was gentle too. He wasn’t trying to hurt her feelings, but he needed to establish a boundary, and this was the only way to do it. He hoped she would take it well, but he didn’t expect her to. After all, she hadn’t respected any boundaries he’d tried to set before now.

“Mmm, don’t stop now,” she protested, “you were just getting my motor running.”

She moved in for another kiss, but Mike dodged successfully before his lips could touch hers. He spun, successfully escaping her grasp for the first time that night.

She stood there looking at him like she had no idea what was going on.

“Come on, Mike. Don’t you want me?”

“It’s like I told you. I’m in a monogamous relationship. And you’re married, Emilia!”

“Right,” she replied. “Exactly. I’m the one who’s married, so I have more to lose than you do. But I still want this. And nobody has to know what we get up to. This could just be our little secret.”

Mike was tempted, and he did consider Emilia’s offer. A secret sex life, outside of his relationship, a little extra fun that didn’t have to hurt anybody.

“No,” he told her. “I’m sorry, but I can’t do that.”

“Why the hell not?” she asked, frustrated. She hiccuped and looked down at the floor.

She didn’t understand, because she didn’t look at the world the same way he did. Emilia saw no reason not to do something if she felt like doing it. She probably saw it as a bit of healthy fun, a way to spice up her life a little.
